Greetings from Kibera
Dear Tam High,
Sorry for the delays. We will have something for you soon. This seems to be a beginning of a very good relationship and learning opportunity for both sides.
When I showed the students here the responses from Tam High they were very happy and excited.

Call and Response first round 2008

The youth in Kibera are excited about the call and response project and they were more than willing to participate and make friends in the USA. We are happy that we can help them learn how to share and make friends. they had many questions at first why Video exchange and what happens to their video images after all.
The younger ones had to repeat so many times to come out perfect but at the end. so far we are confident that this wil be an opportunity to share ideas and learn new things that will make the participants see things in a different perspective.

Nathan Collett wins New Leaders Group Award

Nathan received the award for the Call and Response program, which is a global first - an ongoing video exchange between the youth of the urban slums of Nairobi and youth in the USA. Call and Response was described by IIE as a project that "strongly supports the mission and goals of the New Leaders Group and holds much promise for the future of US-Kenya relations.”
Speaking about the award, Nathan said “This is a great honor for me and for Kibera. The IIE’s New Leaders Group award confirms the importance of building links of mutual understanding between the youth in Africa and America.”
Commenting on the post-election crisis in Kenya, Nathan said “The current crisis presents an opportunity to look beyond the headlines and at root causes for the disturbances in Kenya, in particular, the disaffected youth in the slums. The youth lack economic opportunities and feel isolated, disconnected and without hope. Through our work in the urban slums, we have the opportunity to create meaningful connections and new possibilities.”

Latest Call and Response Pieces
From Will Hammond Jr at BAYCAT
Well, it has been another great semester at BAYCAT and we were very busy with many media projects...one in particular is the exchange of ideas and language with the Kibera folks....the 2nd installment called
Day in The Life can be seen here:
that we worked together on a piece based on Sex Education. The Kibera folks did a great job in addressing their viewpoint and cultural differences.
This can be viewed here:
Overall, I feel the surface has only just been scratched...I hope we can develop a much more direct relationship with our youth and the incredible group out there...peace and love to all of you!
